Keeping convicted felons off of your payroll is desirable in general, but in financially responsible positions in particular. Too often, organizations are victimized by internal fraudsters because they neglected to carefully review these individuals’ criminal and financial backgrounds before hiring them. Today, this oversight can be extremely costly. And it’s not only ex-cons who pose a threat. “Normal” applicants who are carrying around mountains of personal debt, are addiction problems or who have a history of erratic employment behavior also should be screened for during the hiring process.
Most employers who conduct employment background checks rely heavily on criminal history when screening, however that information alone rarely paints a complete picture of any prospective employee. What may look like a red flag could actually be a red herring. So employers need to be thoughtful about how a criminal past may actually affect performance results.
